Friends of Cancer Patients turns the spotlight on Sarcoma, an uncommon malignancy with nonspecific symptoms

“Don’t ignore a lump that is growing too quickly or get immediate medical attention if a pain in or around your bones seems to persist and grow worse,” says Aisha Al Mulla, Director of Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), as she shares the most obviously noticeable symptoms of a rare, yet aggressive type of cancer – Sarcoma. In July, observed globally as Sarcoma Awareness Month, the leading UAE-based civil society organization with an impactful 23-year track record of saving lives by raising awareness about the importance of early cancer detection is continuing its efforts by shining the spotlight on this broad group of uncommon cancers that develop in the body’s connective tissues, including muscles, bones, fat, blood vessels, and tendons. Raising awareness about sarcoma, its early signs, and possible symptoms is crucial for several reasons, opines Al Mulla, adding that the most important amongst them is the fact that “sarcoma often presents with non-specific symptoms, making early detection challenging. Therefore, increased awareness will enable both individuals and healthcare providers to recognize potential signs and take timely action”. “Over two decades, FoCP has continued to reiterate the importance of early detection as it is key for a winning battle against cancer. We offer a range of support for anyone diagnosed with or concerned about sarcoma”, she adds. Although many people have heard of sarcomas, research suggests the majority don’t really know what they are. FoCP is doing its bit to change this reality by heightening awareness around the disease, and has highlighted the following for the UAE community and beyond: ● There are at least 70 different types of sarcoma. All subtypes of sarcoma can be grouped into soft tissue sarcomas and bone sarcomas. ● Sarcomas commonly affect the arms, legs, and torso. Sarcomas can also appear in the stomach and intestines as well as behind the abdomen and internal reproductive organs. ● Sarcoma is very rare, making up less than 2% of all cancers diagnosed each year. ● The key symptoms are a lump that gets bigger quickly, or a persistent and growing pain in or around the bones. ● Stomach pain, feeling unwell and loss of appetite, blood in the stool, or frequent vomiting are other symptoms. By fostering understanding, promoting early detection, and supporting those affected by sarcoma, we can make a positive impact on the lives of patients and their loved ones.
